OptoDrum is an easy to use replacement for a bulky optokinetic drum or a fraying cloth tape to elicit optokinetic nystagmus for evaluation of neurological, otological, and opthalmological disorders.   Simply place the iPhone with a moving pattern in front of a patient’s eye to elicit the response.  The stripe pattern, width, and speed are easily adjustable.

• OptoDrum provides five patterns: black stripes, red stripes, mixed colors, symbols, and animals.

• Drag a finger up or down the screen to make the pattern move at the speed of your finger.

• Double tap the moving pattern to make it stop.

• Pinch or zoom the pattern with two fingers to narrow or widen the pattern.

• A left or right finger swipe switches a stopped pattern to the next one in rotation.

Pros and cons of OptoDrum app for iPhone and iPad

OptoDrum app good for

An incredibly useful tool and beautifully convenient. Well recommended.
Its a little tricky but with enough pinching, tapping the top where the icon bar appears, and sliding down on the screen you can change settings. Direction is changed by catching the movement to a stop and dragging slowly in reverse. It works better with young pediatrics than traditional methods of kinetic assessment and therapy, so worth $5!
Im going to have to start having my iPhone with me while I see patients now. What a fast and easy way to assess and correct the optokinetic reflex. Best though was that I installed it, played with it, emailed with a suggestion and got an email back that my idea was going to be in the next update which is due out soon. The other OKN app doesnt have the pediatric strip like Opto Drum does.
This app is amazing. It has become a vital tool in my home therapy program for the treatment of my Dystonia. It helps me untwisted and cures migraines faster than any medication. Applied neurology is amazing! A huge thank you for putting this out there.
I too had the same problem with Turbo Drum as Camelottt but had she(?) contacted their help desk she would probably have found that her iPad IOS was out of date. Upgrading it to 5.1 was easier said than done and needed a final step of erasing TD then reloading it in order to reset the app directory. Doing this also fixed all the other loaded apps which had stopped working along with the IOS upgrade. Turbo Drum now works as described by the author and is an invaluable aid to neurological disorders.
The freezing issue in fact has been fixed. Ive tried it on both the iPad and iPhone and it consistently has worked very well.

Some bad moments

My first use of the darned thing and it wont stop on double tap as directed. It will change directions but not stop. Five bucks for a crap app. How about .99? At least I wont feel ripped off for buying an app that doesnt work from the start. Not to mention that its just rolling bars! Havent found color options yet, so that may not work either. Dont buy.
I am a neurology resident and have tried this ap but it doesnt work. Dont waste your money. The speed was too slow to elicit nystagmus in any of my adult patients or fellow residents.
My Dr asked me to use this ap. I hate it. You can never get to the correct page. I can spend half an hr just trying to get of one page. the MOST AGGRAVATING AP EVER! And I paid for it!! Err.
My dr. also suggested this app and you cant get off one page. this should be a free app, not $5s.
Some Apps have thousands of hours of programming. This App is maybe 2 hours and cost $5!!! Should 1000% be free. Its rudimentary.
I want a refund! Unable to get this app to work properly. Sticks, does not move, continually rebooting. Support info does not alter problems!
